They were developed by an interdisciplinary, eclectic group of specialists from the military, a fine artist, theatre specialists and an aero engineer. Initially for training torpedo bomber pilots, derivative systems were later devised for small warships, and for submarines. Little was known about T.A.T. as some continued to be in use to the 1970s and many of their elements remained ‘classified’ until the 1980s. With few primary sources easily available, this study aimed to establish what the virtual environment of these simulators looked like to trainees, how they worked, and who were the key players in their development and the relationships between them. To determine what the trainers’ immersive environment looked like, a practical reconstruction was undertaken using period equipment, including a few lanterns used on original T.A.T. This research showed through the reconstruction, the trainees’ view of these simulators, which led to a greater understanding of how they operated.
