Built by Oswald Cane Wylson and Charles Long. Opened 6 Nov 1893 as Empire Palace of Varieties (1433 seats). 1903 renamed Empire and Hippodrome Theatre, 1920 renamed Empire Theatre. 1931 converted into a cinema. Damaged by fire on 2 Feb 1951. Subsequently rebuilt and reopened as New Empire Theatre. Closed 21 Aug 1954. 1955-1962 used as a BBC radio studio, also known as BBC Theatre. Demolished 1963 in favour of a street enlargement.
