Built c. 1721 as a jeu-de-paume hall (Ballhaus). 1755 converted into a court theatre for Duke Ernst Friedrich III. of Saxe-Hildburghausen. 1756 a drama school was established, the first such institution in Germany. 1890-1891 rebuilding and extension by Rommel. 1976-1978 rebuilding and renovations. 2004-2008 renovation and addition of a new wing.
