Built 1908-1909 by Wheelwright and Haven, funded by Eben Dyer Jordan. Opened 8 Nov 1909 with Ponchielli's La Gioconda. 2570 seats. Used for opera performances by the resident company and for touring opera productions, most notably from the Metropolitan Opera Company, New York. Closed in September 1958 due to structural problems. Demolished 1958 in favour of the expansion of the Northeastern University campus. Currently the site is occupied by Northeastern University's Speare Hall. - [NB: This theatre is not identical with the theatre built 1928 as B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre by Thomas Lamb, 1965 renamed Savoy Theatre, 1978 renamed Boston Opera House as home to the Opera Company of Boston (closed in 1990), re-opened 2004 and used for ballet and broadway shows.] (English)
