Built 1795-1796 by Johann Staude and Johann Benedikt Theil, converting a former bastion. Later various rebuildings. 1868-1871 major rebuilding by Mörbitz (ca. 700 seats). 1905 rebuilding by Staude and Benedikt (ca. 655 seats). 1905 installation of a sculpture gable by Ernst Rietschel from the remains of Semper's first Dresden Hoftheater, donated by the city of Dresden. Since 1963, operated as Deutsch-Sorbisches Volkstheater/Nemsko-Serbske Ludowe Dziwadlo and used for opera and drama performances in German and Sorbian. Closed 1969 due to structural problems.
