Built 1867-1875 by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda as an open-air theatre (circo olimpico). Named in honour of the Italian general and politician, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). 1877 addition of a cast iron roof by Giuseppe Damiani Almejda. Interior decorations by Giuseppe Enea, Rocco Lentini, and Giuseppe Cavallaro completed by 1891. Capacity: originally 4000 persons in the main hall (plus 500 persons in each of the two adjacent halls). Current capacity: 950 seats. (English)
