The site has been used for entertainment purposes since 1663 when the first, wooden theatre opened as Musick House. A stone theatre was built 1765 by Thomas Rosoman. After 1772 interior rebuilding. 1802 major auditorium rebuilding by Rudolph Cabanel. The theatre featured a large water tank used for aquatic drama performances. 1838 major alteration. 1879 rebuilding by C. J. Phipps. Since 1896 used as a cinema. 1901 rebuilding by Bertie Crewe. Closed 1915 and left to dereliction. - [1931 a new theatre was built by F. G. M. Chancellor of Matcham and Co. Re-opened 1931. Since 1934 used for opera and ballet by the Vic-Wells Opera Company (that would later become the English National Opera). 1938 extension. 1988 addition of the Lilian Baylis Theatre. 1998 major rebuilding by RHWL Architects.] (English)
