Built 1870 by C. J. Phipps. Opened 16 Apr 1870 with the comedy For Love Or Money. 1887 alterations by C. J. Phipps. 1891 auditorium rebuilding and front rebuilding by C. J. Phipps. 1925-1926 major interior rebuilding (including a completely new auditorium) and rear extension by Robert Atkinson. 1954 -1960, location of 2282 performances of Salad Days. 1969 restorations. Mainly used for drama and comedy performances. Originally ca. 1500 seats, today 690 seats. (English)
