Built 1885-1886 by Ferdinand Fellner & Hermann Helmer as Königlich Freistädtisches Theater (in German), also known as Városi Színház (in Hungarian) and Mestské divadlo (in Slovak). Opened 22 Sep 1886 with Ferenc Erkel's opera Bánk Bán. 1200 seats. 1934 modernization of auditorium. Auditorium foundations damaged by bombs in 1944. Renovation 1949-1950. 1969-1972 extensions and modernization. Named Historická budova Slovenského národného divadla (historical building of the Slovak National Theatre) after the opening of a new National Theatre complex at another site. (English)
