Het gebouw is opgetrokken in neoclassicistische stijl. Het gebouw werd in opdracht van de stad ontworpen in 1827 door stadsarchitect Pierre Bourla. De bouw werd gestart in 1829, maar liep vertraging op door de Belgische Revolutie. Uiteindelijk werd de schouwburg voltooid in 1834 en geopend onder de naam Grand Théâtre of Théâtre Royal Français, naar het Franstalige gezelschap dat erin speelde. (Dutch)

In 1829 neemt de Stad Antwerpen het Tapissierspand over. Het wordt onmiddellijk afgebroken om plaats te maken voor een nieuw prestigieus schouwburg-gebouw naar de plannen van stadsbouw-meester Pierre BrunoNa een studiereis langs theaters in Parijs, Straatsburg en Dijon ontwierp Bourla een neoclassicistische, voor die tijd erg progressieve schouwburg, die als één van de best gebouwde in Europa erkend werd. Op 1 september 1834 werd de nieuwe schouwburg plechtig ingehuldigd. (Dutch)

The Bourla Theatre (Bourlaschouwburg) is a theatre in Antwerp, Netherlands. It was designed in 1827 by Pierre Bourla, and finished in 1834. The Bourla is the last remaining municipal theatre in Europe with original stage machinery.
