Built 1857 by William Finch Hill and Edward Lewis Paraire. Opened 16 Nov 1857 as Weston's Music Hall, a part of the Seven Tankards & Punchbowl Public House. 1868 rebuilding. Re-opened as Royal Music Hall. 1887 major rebuilding by Lander & Bedells. 1892 renamed Royal Holborn Theatre of Varieties. 1897 new facade by Ernest Runtz. 1905 major rebuilding by Frank Matcham. Re-opened 29 Jan 1906 as Holborn Empire Theatre (2000 seats), with the 1897 facade surviving. Damaged by bombs 11/12 May 1941. Remains demolished in 1961 in favour of an office block. (English)
