Celebratissimo teatro cinquecentesco, opera del Palladio. Dopo la di lui morte fu portato a termine dallo Scamozzi nel 1585. Ha una capienza di 1000 posti circa ed è la sede di eccezionali spettacoli musicali e di prosa che hanno generalmente luogo in autunno. (Italian)

Designed 1580 by Andrea Palladio for the Accademia Olimpica, as the first single-standing roofed theatre of modern times. After Palladio's death in 1581, completed by his son Silla Palladio and, from 1584, Vincenzo Scamozzi to the original plans (but extended by a back stage area with characteristic street scenes). Opened 3 March 1585 with Sophocles's Oidipous Tyrannos with choral music by Gabrieli. 470 seats. (English)

The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy was built by architect Andrea Palladio. It is known for its unique stage scenery, creating depth percieved as over 100 metres, despite the stage only being 12 meters deep. It is the first free-standing autonomous theatre building.
