The People’s Theatre was opened in 1875 in the present-day Blaha Lujza square. The horseshoe-shaped layout of the auditorium followed the most popular architectural trends of the times. The building was three-stories high, with rows of boxes, an amphitheatre-style layout, the dominant colours being gilded white and light beige. Boxes were furbished along both wings of the ground floor. The theatre offered 1407 seats and 475 standing places and 50 boxes. The royal box was placed to the right from the stage, opposite of which there was the box for the city dignitaries, and an additional box was set aside for the actors on the third floor. A unique decoration of the auditorium was the sizable chandelier, which offered an almost daylight ambience. In 1908 the National Theatre moved into the building. (English)
