Built 1902-1904 by Bernhard Sehring. Opened 3 Apr 1904 with Schiller's Die Jungfrau von Orleans. 1937 exterior alterations, major interior redecoration. Heavily damaged by bombs in 1944. 1949-1950 rebuilding (exterior to modificated original plans, interior to modern plans). 1960 exterior rebuilding (removing the original decoration). 1977-1979 exterior restoration to the original plans. Major interior rebuilding by Beneke-Daberto BDP scheduled for 2004-2006 (see www.theaterstiftung-bielefeld.de). Used for opera, drama, and ballet performances by the resident companies. 775 seats.
