Antico teatro storico, famosissi­mo per le sue tradizioni nel cam­po dell’opera in musica e della prosa. Fu eretto dall’architetto Gerola­mo Teodoli nel 1731 - 32 e, da allo­ra, ha subito diversi restauri e ri­facimenti che ne hanno compieta- mente mutato l’aspetto originario. Di tali rifacimenti, particolarmen­te significativi quelli del 1826 - 27 (architetto Pietro Pioli), quelli del 1837 - 38 (architetto Pietro Campo­resi), quelli del 1859 - 61 (architet­to Nicola Carnevali) e quelli del 1837-88 (architetto Gioacchino Ersoch). Attualmente è di nuovo in corso un generale restauro per farne la sede definitiva del Teatro Stabile di Roma. Appartiene al Comune ed ha una capienza di 1275 posti. (Italian)
