E’ uno dei teatri italiani più ricchi di tradizioni storiche e artistiche. Eretto nel triennio 1826-28 dall’architetto Carlo Barabino, è sempre stato giudicato fra i migliori esempi di architettura neoclassica. Nel corso del 1943 è stato completamente distrutto (fatta eccezione per le murature principali) dai bombardamenti aerei. Liberato dalle macerie, mascherati i ruderi con tendaggi e velluti, ricoperto con un tetto e un soffitto provvisori, dal 1948 ha ripreso ad ospitare i concerti e gli spettacoli lirici dell’ Ente Autonomo Teatro Comunale dell’Opera.
