From the Baroque period right through to the late twentieth century, theatres kept stock sets for reuse over many years. As well as interiors of all manner of designs, the typical stock included a garden, woodland, market square and village square.

Van de Barok tot diep in de twintigste eeuw hielden theaters repertoiredecors bij voor jarenlang hergebruik. Behalve interieurs in velerlei gedaanten bevatte de typische stock een geschilderde tuin, bos, marktplaats en dorpsplein. Ontelbaar zijn de kaskrakers die hun wereldpremière beleefden in dergelijk prefabmateriaal. Jammer dat het eeuwenoude fenomeen zo bitter weinig materiële sporen naliet, tenminste daar waar je ze zou verwachten in de magazijnen. Fotos, tekeningen en inventarissen zijn er wel in overvloed, en her en der overleeft nog een schaalmodel of afzonderlijk decorelement – in Brugge bijvoorbeeld, en in Heverlee en Lier. Maar van de vele honderden sets zelf, waarvoor ooit zo diep in de portemonnee werd getast, blijft amper een representatief staal over. (Dutch)
