Built 1817-1819 as Großherzogliches Hoftheater (court theatre of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt) by Georg Moller. Opened 7 Nov 1819 with Gaspare Spontini's opera Fernand Cortez oder die Eroberung von Mexiko. Ca. 2000 seats. The mostly wooden theatre was nearly completely destroyed by fire on 24 Oct 1871. - 1875-1879 rebuilding by Christian Horst. Opened 19 Oct 1879 with Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin. 1226 seats.
