Built 1905-1907 as Stadttheater by Heinrich Seeling for the city of Kiel. Opened 1 Oct 1907 with Beethoven's Fidelio. 1943-1944 destroyed by bombs, with only the exterior walls surviving. 1952-1953 rebuilding to modern designs by Heinrich Hansen, Guido Widmann, and Werner Kallmorgen. Stage house by Adolf Zotzmann. Used for opera performances by the resident company. 960 seats. (English)
