E’ il teatro più importante della capitale italiana. E’ la sede degli spettacoli lirici e coreografici del­l’omonimo Ente Autonomo e viene anche utilizzato come teatro nazio­nale di rappresentanza. Fu eretto con capitale privato nel biennio 1879 - 80 dall’arch. Achille Sfondrini. Acquistato dal Comune, fu completamente restaurato e rin­novato nel 1926 - 28 dall’architetto Marcello Piacentini e dallo sceno­tecnico Pericle Ansaldo. Un nuovo restauro, affidato an­cora all’architetto Marcello Piacen­tini e comprendente raggiunta di un nuovo corpo frontale, è stato portato a termine nel 1959. Ha una capienza (sala, palchi, galleria e loggione) di oltre 3000 posti. (Italian)
