From 1926, home to the theatre company Berezil [March] founded by Les Kurbas at Kyiv in 1922. After Kurbas's arrest by Soviet police in 1933, reformed and renamed Ukrainsky Dramatichny Teatr [Ukrainian Drama Theatre]. Later renamed in honour of the Ukrainian poet, Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko (1814-1861). Used for drama performances in Ukrainian. (English)
