Gustav III. prägte das Gebäude durch mehrere Anbauten und das auch heute noch sehenswerte Turmtheater im Gustavianischen Rokokostil. Die Bühne im Schloss Gripsholm, eingeweiht 1783, ist – übrigens nach der von Schloss Drottningholm – die älteste der Welt, die noch mit Bühnenbildern im Original und einer einzigartigen, voll funktionstüchtigen Mechanik arbeitet. Das Theater wird heute allerdings nur noch zu feierlichen Anlässen benutzt, ist aber ansonsten zu besichtigen. Zuschauerraum und Bühne restauriert, Bühnentechnik weitgehend original erhalten, aber nicht funkttionshäfig. Museumbetrieb, selten Aufführungen. (German)

Sweden, small and extremely beautiful playhouse in one of the round towers of Gustavus Vasa s fortress, built in 1535. The theatre opened in 1782 and its scenery and machinery still remain intact, one set of scenes reproducing exactly the pillared décor of the semi-circular auditorium. The interior has been carefully restored, and the theatre is used for occasional performances in the summer months. (English)
