Built 1827-1831 as Grand Théâtre by Antoine-Marie Chenavard and Jean-Marie Pollet, replacing a previous Grand Théâtre (opened 1756). Opened 1 July 1831 with Boieldieu's La Dame Blanche. Ca. 1840 rebuildings. 1985-1993 complete rebuilding by Jean Nouvel within the exterior walls, preserving only the foyer. Addition of a glass dome. Re-opened 14 May 1993. Also known as Opéra Nouvel in honour of the architect, Jean Nouvel. (English)
