+Antico teatro storico, famosissimo per le sue tradizioni nel campo dell’opera in musica e della prosa. Fu eretto dall’architetto Gerolamo Teodoli nel 1731 - 32 e, da allora, ha subito diversi restauri e rifacimenti che ne hanno compieta- mente mutato l’aspetto originario. Di tali rifacimenti, particolarmente significativi quelli del 1826 - 27 (architetto Pietro Pioli), quelli del 1837 - 38 (architetto Pietro Camporesi), quelli del 1859 - 61 (architetto Nicola Carnevali) e quelli del 1837-88 (architetto Gioacchino Ersoch). Attualmente è di nuovo in corso un generale restauro per farne la sede definitiva del Teatro Stabile di Roma. Appartiene al Comune ed ha una capienza di 1275 posti. (Italian)

Opened 31 Jan 1732 with Domenico Sarro's opera Berenice. Subsequently used as Rome's major opera house until the late 19th century. Various restorations. 696 seats. Since 1994 home to the Teatro Stabile di Roma company and mostly used for drama performances. (English)
