Opened 1799 with Pascale Anfossis's opera L'Avaro. 1897 new façade by Pietro Via. 1897 renamed Teatro Donizetti in honour of the Bergamo-born opera composer, Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). Operated as a municipal theatre since 1936. 1960 fly tower rebuilding. 2017-2019 major renovation. 1154 seats. Used for opera, drama and ballet performances. No heritage theatre machinery After obtaining a plot of land from the Municipality and Maggiore Hospital and getting around the city laws, Bortolo Riccardi finally had his own brick theatre built. Despite encountering fierce controversy, the theatre projected by Giovanni Francesco Lucchini was inaugurated on 24th August 1791. (English)

On the night between 11th and 12th January 1797 the theatre burned to the ground in a political arson attack; it was later rebuilt by using only bricks and inaugurated on occasion of the 1801 Fair. (English)
