The Strand Lightboard (aka TCS – Total Control System) stage lighting control system was conceived by Richard Pilbrow, assisted by Richard Brett, of Theatre Projects. They were the theatrical consultants for the new British National Theatre being built from 1969-76. The control’s specification was the subject of extensive research and invention from several sources, seeking the most advanced capability then conceivable to support intensive repertoire staging. Rank Strand Electric was awarded the design and build contract for two systems installed between 1975-76 in the Lyttleton and Olivier Theatres. Based on a DEC minicomputer, the system was ground-breaking in the scale and playback facilities offered, extending memory facilities to lighting design together with integrated control of luminaire position and colour, all in a very ergonomic desk with VDUs. Eight further systems were sold and provided the model for later designs to draw on. This study summarises the history of the British National Theatre then investigates the genesis of Lightboard’s design, together with analysis of the electronics needed to achieve the functionality of the two versions.
