Built 1810-1811 as Hoftheater by Emanuel Joseph von Herigoyen and Friedrich Samuel Balthasar Susenbeth for prince-primate Carl Theodor von Dalberg. Opened 1 Nov 1811, probably with Calderón's Der standhafte Prinz. Severely damaged by bombs in 1944 and 1945. 1959-1960 renovations. 1980-1981 renovations and stagehouse rebuilding. 533 seats (+ 62 standing). Currently used for guest performances. (English)
