1741 leased to the impresario, Josef Selliers by Emperess Maria Theresia. Subsequently completely rebuilt after unsuccesful attempts to convert the Ballhaus to a theatre proper. 1748 opened as Königliches Theater nächst der Burg. 1756 rebuilding and extension, installation of a new façade at the rear of the stagehouse. 1776 renamed Teutsches Nationaltheater nächst der Burg. 1794 renamed K. K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg. 1848 renamed K. K. Hof- und Nationaltheater. 1852 renamed K. K. Hofburgtheater. 1125 seats. Demolished 1888 in favour of the Michaelertrakt extension of the Hofburg palace. [1874-1888 a new Burgtheater was built at another site.] (English)

Am 14. März 1741 überließ Kaiserin Maria Theresia dem Theaterunternehmer Selliers ein neben der Hofburg leerstehendes Ballhaus zur Verpachtung an Schauspielertruppen. Ihr Sohn Joseph II. stellte es 1776 per Dekret als „Teutsches Nationaltheater“ unter die Administration des Hofes, der auch die Finanzierung übernahm. Damit begann die Glanzzeit der deutschsprachigen Schauspielkunst in Wien. Seit 1794 trägt das Theater den Namen „K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg“. Nach fast 150 Jahren Spielbetrieb wurde am 14. Oktober 1888 – nach vierzehnjähriger Bauzeit – das neue Theaterhaus am Ring eröffnet. (German)
