Destroyed in 1861 by a fire, leaving only the foyers and staircases. 1861-1862 rebuilt by Josep Oriol Mestres. Re-opened 20 Apr 1862. Again destroyed by a fire on 31 Jan 1994. 1994-1999 re-built by Ignácio Sola Morales. Re-opened 7 Oct 1999 with Puccini's Turandot. Seats: 3500 (1847), 3000 (1862), today ca. 2700. (English)

The Gran Teatre del Liceu by architect Miquel Garriga i Roca is the largest opera house in the Catalan capital Barcelona and is located on the Rambles in the centre of the city. The opera and concert house was reopened in 1999 after a fire in 1994.
