Built 1887-1888 by Julius Hennicke and Hermann Philipp von der Hude for the theatre director Oscar Blumenthal, replacing a the circus building Zirkus Krembser. Opened 11 September 1888 with Lessing's Nathan der Weise. Named in honour of the German playwright, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). Originally 1100 seats (+ 60 standing), later 1033 seats. Destroyed by bombs in April 1945. (English)
