Built 1914-1918 by Bodo Ebhardt for Duke Leopold IV. of Lippe and the Lippischer Theaterverein society, on the site of the former Hoftheater (built 1825, destroyed by fire in 1912). Opened 28 Sep 1919 as Lippisches Landestheater with Lortzing's Undine. 1968-1969 rear extension by rehearsal facilities and technical rooms. 679 seats. Used for opera, ballet, and drama performances by the resident Landestheater Detmold companies. (English)
