+Built 1781-1783 as Deutsches Nationaltheater by Frantisek Antonin Count Nostic Rieneck. Opened 1783 with Lessing's Emilia Galotti. Also known as Graf-Nositz-Theater / Hraběci Nosticovo Divadlo. 1798 purchased by the Bohemian Diet (a parliament of landed gentry) and renamed Královské Stavovské Divadlo / Königliches Ständetheater (Royal Theatre of the Estates). 1859 extension by an extra floor. From 1862, used exclusively for German performances. Renamed Königlich Deutsches Stadttheater. 1920 re-renamed Stavovské Divadlo and mainly used for drama performance by the Naródní Divadlo ensemble. 1948 renamed Tylovo divadlo after the Czech playwright, Josef Kajetán Tyl (1808-1856). 1982-1990 major renovations to the original plans. 1990 re-renamed Stavovské Divadlo. Currently used for opera and ballet performances by the Naródní Divadlo ensembles. 1600 seats. (English)

No heritage stage machinery One of the oldest European theatres operating continuously since its inauguration. It was constructed in 1781–1783 by the imperial court architect Anton Haffenecker for count Franz Anton Nostitz-Rieneck, the most important royal official in Bohemia. (English)

Mozart created two operas for Prague which premiered in this theatre: Don Giovanni (1787) and La Clemenza di Tito (1791). In 1859, one storey was added to the building and an extra gallery in the now higher auditorium in 1882, the auditorium was redecorated in the present style. (English)
