Severely damaged by bombs on 23 March 1944. After plans to demolish the ruin, a citizen's initiative Rettet das Opernhaus was formed in 1953. Rebuilt as a concert hall with modern interior in the 1970s until 1981. Re-opened 28 Aug 1981 as Alte Oper with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8. The building contains two concert halls: Großer Saal (ca. 2500 seats) and Mozart-Saal (ca. 700 seats). (English) | ||
