Located in the city centre, since its inauguration it has played an important role in Rio and national culture, hosting artists, orchestras and ballet companies. With a design inspired by the Paris Opera House, it was restored to its original style and reopened in 2010 with 219,000 sheets of gold, 57 tonnes of copper, 1,500 new luminaires and more than 5,000 light bulbs. In 1934, upon the observation that the theater was small for the new size of the population of the city, auditory capacity was increased to 2,205 seats. The work, despite its complexity, was held in three months, record time for the season. Later, with some modifications, it acquired the current number of 2,361 places. (English)
