Built 1846-1855 by Virgilio Vespignani. Interior decoration by Giuliano Corsini, Giuseppe Carotino, and Cesare Bacinetti. Paintings by Luigi Samoggia and N. Dal Pane. Opened 4 Aug 1855 with Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto (due to censorship, under the title Viscardello) and Giueseppe Rota's ballet Il fornaretto. 1905 electrification. Severely damaged by bombs in 1943/1944. Subsequently rebuilt to the original plans (with a new ceiling painting by Angelo Canevari). Restorations ca. 2016-2017. (English)
