1856 R 1910 R 1956 R 1985-Fue fundado por la Sociedad Lírico Española con el objetivo de tener un espacio exclusivamente dedicado a las interpretaciones zarzuelistas. Sus principales impulsores fueron los compositores Francisco Asenjo Barbieri y Joaquín Gaztambide, el libretista Luis Olona y el cantante Francisco Salas. Fue inaugurado el 10 de octubre de 1856 (coincidiendo con el cumpleaños de Isabel II). Sufrió un incendio en 1909 y fue reinaugurado en 1914. Entre 1956 y 1970 fue propiedad de la Sociedad General de Autores de España, que llevó a cabo una nueva remodelación, y en 1984 pasó a manos del Ministerio de Cultura. Arqto.
