The building was originally a trade market for tapestries. In 1709 it became a theatre. It was demolished to build theBourla theatre. (English)
Deze veilingshalle voornamelijk voor tapijten werd vanaf 1709-1712 reeds als publiek theater ingericht. Het werd toen vooral gebruikt door de armen-aalmoezeniers die er liefdadigheidsvoorstellingen organiseerden. (Dutch)
In 1753 wordt het door brand vernielde 16e eeuwse pand heropgebouwd met een nieuwe zaal. Het Tapissierspand bleef tot 1829 hét theatercentrum van Antwerpen. Het Vlaamse toneel komt er echter nauwelijks aan bod. Vanaf de Oostenrijkse bezettingsperiode genoten de Franse en Italiaanse opera's er immers de voorkeur. Onder het Frans bewind promoveert het Tapissierspand tot 'Grand Théâtre', Willem I verleent het in 1816 de eretitel 'Théâtre Royal'. Ondertussen was het uitgegroeid tot een centrum van quasi uitsluitend Frans cultuurleven. (Dutch)
