Built 1902 by Fyodor Schechtel. Home to the Moskovitsky Khudozhestvenny teatr [MKhAT; Moscow Art Theatre] company, also known as Dramaticheksy teatr imeni Stanislavskovo i Nemirovich-Danchenko after Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavski (1863-1938) and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko (1858-1943) who had founded the company in 1898. In Soviet times named Teatr soyuza SSR imeni Maxima Gorkovo. - When the MKhAT company split in two companies in the 1990s, one of the companies was renamed MKhat im. Antonina Chekhova in honour of the Russian author, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) and continued to use the building on Kamergersky Pereulok. The other MKhAT building on Tverskoy Bulvar became home to the MKhat im. Maxima Gorkovo. (English)
